Money is the alienated essence of man's labor and life

About This Quote

Money is the alienated essence of man's labor and life. It is the alienated essence of man's labor and life that makes him into an object ,instead of a man. This means that money is the essence of an object , it is the essence of things, because all things have been made from labor. In this quote, Shakespeare, in a very profound way, explains the alienation of labor from man. He says that labor is the essence of a man, but it is alienated from him.

In other words, labor has been taken from him and turned into something that does not belong to him. Therefore, by definition he can never be a full person because he does not have his essence--his labor. Ironically, Shakespeare’s materialist perspective was a direct challenge to a Christian perspective which held that money was a symbol of sin and should be used only for the necessities of life. The fact that Shakespeare’s message came from a man who believed in God--and who many still consider one of England’s greatest poets--underscores the importance of materialism to our modern conception.
